ORANGE BEACH — Teenagers from throughout the Archdiocese of Mobile joined together at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach on Feb. 18-20 for this year's Archdiocesan Catholic Youth Conference, popularly known as ACYC.
AUBURN — St. Michael Parish in Auburn has announced that Deborah A. Brooks will be the first principal of St. Michael Catholic School, which opens in August.
MOBILE — The 91st annual Catholic Charities Appeal Sunday was Jan. 30. As of Monday, Feb. 21, 6,561 generous donors have participated with a financial pledge that once fulfilled will allow us to achieve 97.6 percent of our $4.5 million goal. The generosity of the parishioners of our archdiocese is inspirational. A detailed report of pledge totals by parish can be found on page 10.
A burgeoning youth ministry program at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Enterprise recently received a big boost from the “Generations of Faith – Endowing our Future with Hope” campaign and the people of the Archdiocese of Mobile.

We are on the cusp of Lent. Many of our conversations will go something like this, “What are you giving up for Lent?” It is a great question and a good start to observing Lent. But let’s not forget that the Church invites us to focus on three areas in our lives; prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Our Lenten devotions or practice should include all three of these.
Years ago, my wife and I decided to take a first-hand look at a culture we thought we knew well based on the history books, news, TV sitcoms and motion pictures we consumed back in the Dominican Republic. And so, 30 years ago, along with our only daughter at the time, we embarked on a journey that brought us to the U.S. to make this foreign land our new home, a place where we could fulfill and live our "American Dream."

In some areas of our Archdiocese the joyful mayhem of the Carnival Season has begun. These festivities are found in much of southern Alabama. Even in communities where there are no carnival processions through the streets, it is still common to encounter the green, purple and gold ubiquitous this time of year.
Msgr. William Skoneki, rector of the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, administers a throat blessing following Mass on the Feast of St. Blaise, Feb. 3. The blessing invokes the intercession of St. Blaise, a fourth-century Armenian bishop and martyr credited with saving the life of a boy who was choking on a fish bone.
When we love someone, we naturally want to give to that person. Whether it is our children, grandchildren, parents, spouse, friend or a new relationship, we generously give to them. Why do we have to work so hard at being a good steward when we love God?
There are almost 5 million people living in the state of Alabama. There are approximately 85,000 Catholics in the southern half of the state. This half of the state is the Archdiocese of Mobile. There is not an exact distribution of citizens or of Catholics, but for ease of conversation we can say that approximately 3.4 percent of the residents in our archdiocese are Catholic.
