Parishes and ministries in the Archdiocese of Mobile are continuing to assess damage from Category 2 Hurricane Sally that struck the Gulf Coast early Sept. 16.

Brenda Withers Hicks, who serves as administrator of the Father Purcell Memorial Exceptional Children’s Center in Montgomery, is being recognized for her ministry. The children’s center is a skilled pediatric nursing home for 58 developmentally disabled children in Montgomery and Brenda has been named one of eight finalists for the Catholic Extension’s Lumen Christi Award.

Hurricane Sally left a lasting mark on many in the southern half of our archdiocese. The power of her ferocious winds were highly underestimated.

I hope and pray that everyone is doing reasonably well after our little dance with Sally. What a year, huh? COVID-19, great civil unrest, worry about the economic impact from those, and now Sally. I know many of us are feeling like this string of events is straight out of the Book of Revelation.

Hurricane Sally inflicted damage upon much of our archdiocese. Its effects were felt as far north as Montgomery and Auburn. The worst of its winds were endured by the people in the southern half of Baldwin and Mobile counties.

While COVID-19 has curtailed many gatherings, the “Called to Love” conference will provide women a chance to come together once again.

Hurricane Laura tore through many buildings in Louisiana and Texas, including the Lake Charles, La., home of Margaret and Jerry Savoie. They are the parents of Fr. Johnny Savoie, pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Mobile.

Wisdom is ageless. The Liturgy of the Hours, the official prayer of the Church which clergy, religious and many lay people pray each day, recently contained a writing by St. John Chrysostom, a fourth century Archbishop of Constantinople.

Does the Church teach that, “Outside the Church there is no salvation?” WHAT? That would mean that everybody who is not Catholic is going to hell? Crazy!
