Una Lección de Emaús — A lesson from Emmaus

El capítulo 24 del evangelio según San Lucas nos narra la historia de los dos discípulos que, el mismo día de la resurrección de Jesús, comentaban todo lo que había sucedido en Jerusalén mientras caminaban hacia un pueblo llamado Emaús.
 Nos dice San Lucas que Jesús se les acercó y comenzó a caminar con ellos, pero que los dos discípulos no lo reconocieron, por lo que Jesús les preguntó de que hablaban tan llenos de tristeza; y que uno de los discípulos le preguntó si él era el único que no sabía lo que había sucedido en Jerusalén con Jesús el nazareno.
Jesús entonces les explicó que era necesario que el Mesías padeciera para así entrar en su gloria, y todos los pasajes de la Escritura que se referían a él, comenzando por Moisés y siguiendo con todos los profetas.
Muchas veces nos pasa como a los discípulos de Emaús, nos desalentamos fácilmente ante los problemas y adversidades, y regresamos descorazonados y sin esperanza a ese “Emaús” interno donde nos encerramos en nosotros mismos y en nuestra desolación. En esas ocasiones no reconocemos a Jesús resucitado caminando junto a nosotros.
 A veces, al igual que los discípulos de Emaús somos “insensatos y duros de corazón” por nuestra falta de formación, por desconocer las Sagradas Escrituras y como el estudio de ellas, partiendo desde el antiguo testamento, nos lleva a tener una relación más íntima con Jesús y a reconocer su presencia en cada momento de nuestras vidas, no solo en la fracción del pan.
El Ministerio Hispano de la Arquidiócesis de Mobile, a través de la Escuela de Formación San Juan Diego, está impartiendo el curso “Introducción a las Sagradas Escrituras” desde mediados de abril. Por cinco semanas estaremos estudiando las escrituras desde el libro del Génesis hasta los evangelios para poder identificar a Jesús en nuestro caminar por la vida y ser agentes pastorales que vivamos y llevemos el mensaje de redención y salvación a todos nuestros entornos.

Chapter 24 of the Gospel according to St. Luke tells the story of two disciples who, on the same day of Jesus' resurrection, were conversing about all the things that had occurred in Jerusalem as they walked to a village called Emmaus.
St. Luke tells us that Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but that the two disciples did not recognize him, so Jesus asked them what they were talking about so sadly. One of the disciples asked him if he was the only one who did not know what had happened in Jerusalem with Jesus the Nazarene.
Jesus then explained to them that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer in order to enter into His glory, and described the passages of Scripture that referred to him, beginning with Moses and all the prophets.
Many times we too act like the disciples of Emmaus, we get easily discouraged in the face of problems and adversities, and we return disheartened and hopeless to that internal "Emmaus" where we close in on ourselves and our desolation. On those occasions, we do not recognize the risen Jesus walking alongside us.
 Sometimes, like the disciples of Emmaus, we are "foolish and slow of heart," maybe because the noise of daily life prevents us from spending time with Jesus through the Holy Scriptures. Studying and reflecting on them, starting with the Old Testament, leads us to have a more intimate relationship with Jesus and recognize his presence in every moment of our lives, not only in the breaking of the bread.
The Hispanic Ministry of the Archdiocese of Mobile, through the San Juan Diego Formation School, has been teaching the course "Introduction to the Holy Scriptures" since mid-April. For five weeks we will be studying the scriptures from the book of Genesis to the Gospels, to be able to recognize Jesus in our walk through life and be pastoral agents who live and bring the message of redemption and salvation to our surroundings.
