By The Catholic Week H. William McAtee has a deep love for both McGill-Toolen Catholic High School and Spring Hill College and wants to share that appreciation.
Officials announced recently the creation of the H. William McAtee ’65 Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship will be given to one “worthy graduate of McGill-Toolen Catholic High School who wishes to pursue a Jesuit education at Spring Hill College” beginning with the incoming Spring Hill College freshman class of 2023.
“A very rich history binds together McGill-Toolen and Spring Hill, and the H. William McAtee '65 Endowed Scholarship will help to continue that legacy for generations to come,” said Drew Williams, a McGill-Toolen alumnus and current Spring Hill College admissions counselor.
McAtee is a 1961 graduate of McGill Institute, and he earned his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1965 from Spring Hill College.
After graduating from Spring Hill, he earned a Master of Arts in History from the University of Alabama. He served on active duty for the United States Army for two years. In 1970, Mr. McAtee joined the faculty of McGill Institute and went on to serve for a total of 40 years until his retirement in 2011.
“At Spring Hill College, we seek to live out the ‘cura personalis’ of our order's founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola. St. Ignatius sought to form his Jesuit sons in the body, mind, and spirit and thus ‘care for the whole person,’ You would be hard-pressed to find a graduate of McGill and Spring Hill that lives out this vision better than Mr. McAtee,” Williams said.
“Perhaps most importantly, McAtee holds a deep conviction about his commitment to the Catholic faith, as is evident in his service to the Church here at McGill-Toolen and as a sacristan at St. Mary Parish, next door to the high school.”
