50 Years Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J., president of Marquette University, gave the Baccalaureate Address to the 134 graduates of Spring Hill College. Led by Fr. Joseph Wise, C.R, record numbers turned out to honor the Blessed Mother at the celebration at Queen of Mercy Parish, Montgomery. New officers of St. Ignatius Sanctuary Society were: Mrs. Ann Young, president; Mrs. Skeeter Diehl, recording secretary; Mrs. Betty Wilson, corresponding secretary; and Mrs. Lucille Wilkins, treasurer. The Bishop Toolen High School “Dirty Dozen” Volleyball Team were invited to the National Girls Volleyball Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. The 20th Annual State Convention of the Knights of Columbus was held in Huntsville. The new church of Christ the King, Andalusia, was blessed and dedicated by Bishop John L. May. Officers of the Junior Auxiliary of Providence Hospital were: Anna Franco, president; Sara Vautier, vice president; Julie Johnson, treasurer; Mary Pat Voor, secretary; and Beth Robinson, Deanie Bertucci, Julia Cash and Suzanne Hardy, board members. Honor graduates of Providence School of Nursing were Diane Clark Crenshaw and Martha Smith Holloway. Officers of the Women’s Guild of St. John’s Parish, Enterprise were: Eloise Hudson, president; Ann Sims, vice president; Monica Flowers, secretary; and Terry Messies, treasurer.
25 Years Accompanying Archbishop Oscar H. Lipscomb on the occasion of Ad Limina Audience with Pope John Paul II were a group of seminarians from the Mobile Archdiocese that included Rev. Mr. Stephen Martin, Mr. Michael Labadie, Mr. David Shoemaker, Mr. Alexandro Valladares and Mr. Den Irvin. Sister Anne Souto, a native of Mobile and member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet, celebrated her golden jubilee as a member of the order. John B. Saint, William J. Cox, Sister Mary Vernon Gentle, RSM, and Richard E. Powers were elected to the Board of Trustees of Mercy Medical. Spring Hill College presented Owen Flanagan, chair of the philosophy department at Duke University, as the 1988 Suarez Lecturer. The McGill-Toolen Science Olympiad members captured three gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals at the competition in Tuscaloosa. Team members were: Lauren Joiner, Rachael Bru, Beth McIntosh, Kathy Zitnik, Katy Millard, Joseph Lee, John Bedsole, Peter Tacchi, Katonio Butler, Rick Stuardi, Tim Maynard and Reade Loper. Fr. Lawrence Manning O’Neill, S.J., a native of Havanna Cuba, where his father was U. S. Ambassador, died in New Orleans. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1922. Fr. O’Neill served as pastor of St. Ignatius Parish, Mobile, from 1963-1973. He died at the Jesuit Residence in New Orleans at the age of 94. A Memorial Mass was held in Mobile at St. Ignatius. The new sanctuary for Our Savior Parish, Mobile, was dedicated by Archbishop Oscar H. Lipscomb. Msgr.
