Rev. Paul Smallwood Tipton, S. J., was named president-elect of Spring Hill College.
Student Government Association members of Montgomery Catholic High for 1972-73 academic year included: Allan Stroh, president; Sue Mangenast, secretary-treasurer; Maureen McGinty, Ed Doon, Joe Edington, Frances Allen, Cathy Neuhoff, Geraldine Woods, Theresa Colt, Gene Longotaur, Linda Padden, Melinda Adams, Ti Ortega and Jimmy Adams.
The McGill-Toolen Marching Band performed in new uniforms designed after the Michigan State University band and new hats identical to those worn by the University of Alabama’s “Million Dollar Band.”
Approximately 1,600 students and faculty members attended the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit celebrated by Bishop John L. May and several priests of the archdiocese.
Bishop John L. May made the following appointments: Msgr. David Sullivan, vicar for diocesan development; Fr. Joseph Jennings, associate vicar for diocesan development; Fr. Thomas Weise, vicar for charities.
Members of the Montgomery Catholic High School board were: Glen W. Adams, president; Leonard Mrotek, vice president; Kitty Reickenback, secretary; Loreng Newhoff III, Carl Barranco, Jim Licari, Pete Mastin, Donald J. Deiters, Col. Angelo Castanza, Sr., Michael E. McGinn, Sister Martha and Dr. Thomas Doyle.
Newly elected members of St. Columba Parish Council were Larry Ballantine, Don Perkins and Manuel Venegas.

Twenty-plus participants along with family and friends attended Mass celebrated by Archbishop Oscar H. Lipscomb at St. Ignatius Chapel, Mobile, in preparation for their pilgrimage to World Youth Day being held in Paris. The group began their pilgrimage with a tour of Ancient and Christian Rome before joining close to 2 million people in Paris for World Youth Day 1997.
Archbishop Oscar H. Lipscomb joined the Seminarians and members of the Serra Club for a seafood dinner at Orange Beach during their four days of renewal, fellowship and relaxation prior to their return to priestly studies.
Gregory F. Lucey, S. J., began his tenure as Spring Hill College’s 37th president as the new school year began. Fr. Lucey succeeded William Rewak, S.J., who had served the Jesuit institution for eight years.
Ann Grady was named chairwoman of the Visitation Monastery’s annual Treasures Auction and Sale to benefit the Chapel, a century-old national historic landmark.
Bishop Toolen Class of ’62 celebrated their 35 year reunion at Gus’s.
McGill-Toolen students Anna Bender and Gia Kimbrough were named All American Cheerleaders at Auburn Cheerleader Camp.
Theme of the Catholic School Orientation was “Jesus Christ: Yesterday, Today, Forever.” Keynote Speaker was Mr. Leland Nagel. Miss Gwen Byrd, Superintendent of Schools, presented service certificates to teachers. Archbishop Lipscomb presented Miss Byrd with a 20-year service certificate. Mobile District Attorney John Tyson spoke to the assembly on Juvenile Crime and noted 40 percent of the crime in the state of Alabama is committed by juveniles.
"U. S. News and World Report" ranked Spring Hill College among the best universities in the South.
Sister Mary Beth Kubera, D. C., was welcomed as the new principal of St. Jude High School by Fr. Matthew Sindik, director of the City of St. Jude.
