By CONSTANCE TAYLOR For The Catholic Week MOBILE — The Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary 75th annual Gulf Coast District Conference will be in Mobile, "The Birthplace of Claver," May 5-7 at the Marriott Hotel on Airport Boulevard. This year's theme is “Clavers Souled Out for Service.” The organization founded in Mobile 113 years ago at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church by four Josephite priests allowed people of color the opportunity to have membership in a Catholic fraternity. The Gulf Coast District comprised of Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, South and North Carolina as well as San Andres Island and Colombia will have members in attendance at this conference. Zone 1 of the District which is comprised of Mobile, Prichard, Chastang, Daphne and Pensacola is hosting this conference. The presidents of the Conference Zone 1 and Planning Committee Chairs are William Frazier and Bernadine Ransom. The Deputies of the District are Joseph Piernas and Thayes Sturgis, and Fr. Vernon Huguley, a native of Mobile, is the District chaplain. Presidents Michael Lizana, and Carmen Rancifer Jenkins are the presiding officers for this conference. The Supreme Knight /Chief Executive Officer/ Chairman of the Board is Dr. Christopher Pichon, the Supreme Lady is Micaela Le Blanc and Grant Jones is the Executive Director of the Knights of Peter Claver, Inc. The conference will follow the usual protocol with board meetings, plenary sessions, workshops, conference mass, banquet and dance. Members and guests are encouraged to tour the city and participate in the social activities. Visitors may attend the Mass that is open to the public. A limited number of banquet/ dance tickets are available for purchase from members of the local councils and courts.
