By The Catholic Week MOBILE — Deacon William Dolan, who served three parishes, established the Archdiocese of Mobile Office of Planned Giving and Stewardship and previously served as the president of the deacon community, died Aug. 28 at the age of 92.
Deacon Dolan was ordained on Nov. 4, 1984, and was initially assigned to St. Mary Parish in Mobile. He was later assigned to Cathedral Parish and St. John the Baptist Parish in Magnolia Springs before retiring from active ministry.
In 1988, he established archdiocesan Office of Planned Giving and Stewardship. He also served terms for Region V on the National Catholic Stewardship Council and in 2002 was awarded the Bishop William G. Connare Award by the International Catholic Stewardship Council.
Deacon Dolan was also appointed chaplain at the University of South Alabama Medical Center for 15 years and was a volunteer chaplain at Mobile Infirmary.
Deacon Dolan, born Dec. 2, 1929, attended St. Mary Catholic School, McGill Institute and Port Arthur College. He was an Eagle Scout, proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served as scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 29 for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles C. Dolan Sr. and Mary Moslander Dolan; his wife of 60 years, Gloria Moore Dolan; an infant daughter Elizabeth Teresa Dolan; four brothers and one sister.
He is survived by seven children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was Sept. 1 at St. Mary Catholic Church, with burial at Catholic Cemetery.
