By Jenna Wood For the Catholic Week McGill-Toolen Catholic High School dedicated the McGill-Toolen Athletic Complex football fieldhouse in Zackary Miller's memory on Friday, Nov. 3. Navy Special Warfare Operator Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) Zackary Wilson Miller II passed away on June 4, 2021, after a brief battle with cancer. He was a highly decorated combat veteran with seven deployments and numerous awards including the Bronze Star with Valor and Extraordinary Heroism, and the Purple Heart. As an alumnus of McGill-Toolen, Zack's connection to the school ran deep. He graduated in 2000, where he was an outstanding athlete, having excelled in multiple sports, including football, where he served as the team captain. Prior to the game, McGill-Toolen President Fr. Bry Shields blessed the fieldhouse and prayed with the football team, cheerleaders, members of the band and Zack's family and friends. A presentation and dedication took place on the field at halftime recognizing the incredible dedication of Zack's family and friends who worked tirelessly to establish a memorial fund in his name. Kim Flournoy, Zack's mother, and dear friends Matt Dearmon and Trevor Thompson set an ambitious goal of $150,000 and they achieved this goal in an astonishingly short period of time. Their unwavering determination and the outpouring of support from the community was a testament to the love and respect that Zack inspired in all who knew him.
