MOBILE – Deacon Ronnie Hathorne has served admirably as Archdiocese of Mobile chancellor as well as the director of the archdiocesan permanent diaconate program.

MOBILE — Congratulations to Lee Eilers, Home Repair Coordinator for Catholic Social Services of Mobile County, one of 41 nominees for Catholic Extension’s Lumen Christi Award.

In 1699, the French government sent an expedition of 200 settlers led by two brothers, Iberville and Bienville Le Moyne, from Canada to establish a French colony on the Gulf Coast. The brothers built a fort on what is now the Mississippi Gulf Coast. After exploring the area, they decided in 1702 to establish their capital on a nearby large bay. They named their capital and the bay “Mobile” after a local tribe. They named the colony “Louisiana” after the King of France. So Mobile was the first capital of Louisiana.

MOBILE — St. Mary and St. Joan of Arc Parishes in Mobile co-hosted their third annual Feast of Corpus Christi Celebration on June 11. 

When I was notified that I was accepted into the Called to Witness program, I also learned the names of the people that I would be traveling with to El Salvador.

In the last two editions I have written about mothers and families. This time, I want to write about fathers and their important role. And, by the way, happy Father's Day to all dads out there. I hope you have a fun and relaxing day with your family. Fun with our families is very important, and often neglected.

Father’s Day is approaching fast, just a few more days until the greeting cards, phone calls, neckties and other gifts from children, nieces, nephews or grandkids begin to descend on our homes. This is a very special day for all fathers, as it reminds us of the great blessing that it is to partake with God in the creation of new life.

When I dip into life’s memory bank for moments of unalloyed joy, the afternoon of October 9, 1966, quickly surfaces.

50 Years Ago The administrative team moved for the consolidation of McGill Institute and Bishop Toolen High School were: Sister Mary Alda Balthrop, RSM, principal; Wayne T. Merritt, director of curriculum; Margaret Golf, director of human development; Thomas P. Davis, director of student activities; and Sister Mary Rosina Bayliss, director of finance.

FAIRHOPE — St. Michael Catholic High School broke ground June 7 on its highly anticipated new football and soccer field. The groundbreaking marked a significant milestone in the school's commitment to providing outstanding athletic facilities for its students, faculty and the local community.

MOBILE – Then-Deacon Thomas LaPointe said last month that he was ready to become a priest thanks to his years of seminary formation and other ministry experiences. But that preparation didn’t prevent Fr. Thomas LaPointe from being amazed as to what took place on June 3.

“The Catholic Week,” the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Mobile, earned three national awards June 9 at the Catholic Media Conference’s annual convention in Baltimore. The awards were presented by the Catholic Media Association of the United States and Canada for work produced in 2022.
